Roseline Viera from New Bedford, Massachusetts, claimed a $1 million prize last week. She was unusually tight lipped about her plans for the money, but said her husband bought the winning scratch-off ticket.
The "$250,000,000 Holiday Gifts," scratcher was purchased from the Quick Pic convenience store on Sawyer Street, New Bedford. The store will receive a $10,000 retailer's bonus for selling the winning ticket.
Massachusetts State Lottery spokesman Christian Teja said around 1,500 people in Massachusetts claim prizes of $1 million or more each year.
According to Teja, players who win $1 million and take the cash option get a one-time payment of $650,000, minus 30% taxes. Players who choose the annuity option receive 20 annual payments of $50,000, before taxes.
