Former Fisherman Pulls in a Big Win

A retired fisherman from Bell Island, Nova Scotia, got October off to a good start when he netted a CAD$ 13.8 million prize.

Leon Hirtle, 77, successfully matched all six of the winning numbers in the Canada Lotto 649 drawing held on Wednesday, October 1, 2014.

Hirtle checked the winning numbers on Thursday evening while visiting a neighbor. They looked so familiar he jotted them down onto a piece of paper and returned home to check them against his ticket. They were a perfect match.

Hirtle bought his winning ticket from the Phamasave pharmacy in Bridgewater so the pharmacy will receive a CAD$ 138,000 retailer's bonus for selling a winning ticket.

When asked about his plans for the money, Hirtle said: "I haven't decided."
