On Tuesday, July 29, 2014, IT Manager Wayne Home, 57, stooped off on the way to work, popped into the Barming Post Office in Bull Orchard, Maidstone, Kent, and purchased a ticket for that night's Euromillions draw. Two days later he checked the ticket and realized he'd won £1 million in the Euromillions Raffle.
His wife Desirée, 57, said: "I couldn't believe it. At first he said we had won £500,000, then he told me we'd actually won a million and I thought he was joking. I've been breaking out into fits of laughter for days."
The good news comes at the end of a particularly dark period for the East Farleigh residents, who have been married for 34 years. Desirée was diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2008 and suffered respiratory failure on two occasions.
Speaking of their Euromillions win, Desirée said: "It is great for the children and us. It allows us to relax after such a difficult period."
The couple has three children and four grandchildren.
Now that money is no longer an issue Wayne and Desirée intend to take it easy, enjoy life, and spend more time pursuing activities they enjoy.
"We've gone from living day by day to relaxing day by day," Wayne said.
The lucky winners describe their present home as 'perfect', so they have no plans to buy a bigger house, but Wayne admits to having nautical ambitions. He plans to upgrade the £1,126 boat he bought from eBay and make it suitable for ocean travel.
