Kansas Man Wins Some Cash Using Fortune Cookie Numbers

Saturday's $389,672 Super Kansas Cash Jackpot has been claimed by a man from Olathe in Johnson County. The lucky winner, who has opted to remain anonymous, claimed his prize on Monday, August 25, 2014, and told lottery officials he owed it all to a fortune cookie.

"I had kept a few fortune cookie fortunes that had lucky numbers on them, so I thought I would see just how lucky the numbers really were and have been playing them since," the man explained. "I was about to give up on them, but I’m very glad I didn't."

The fortunate player discovered he was holding a winning ticket on Sunday night when he went online and checked his numbers against those on the Kansas Lottery website.

"When I realized I had matched all the numbers on one of my Super Kansas Cash plays, I couldn’t believe it," he said. "I immediately signed the back of the ticket and had my wife verify I was looking at the numbers correctly—we were both shocked."

The winner and his wife have not had time to give much thought as to how they will spend the money and they plan on keeping their big win strictly under wraps.

"We’re very private people," the winner said. "We’ll probably only tell our daughter about our win and no one else."

Winning a fortune on a fortune cookie is nothing new. In March 2014 a US Powerball player from New York won $2 million using numbers she took from a fortune cookie.  A US Mega Millions player from Jose, California, also got lucky in March when her cookie numbers secured her a $400,000 prize.
