Babysitting proved to be a profitable venture for a couple from Wisconsin last week.
Frederic residents, Donald and JoAnn Marek, crossed four states to babysit their grandchildren in Louisiana. While they were there they purchased a US Powerball ticket from RaceTrac Petroleum in Slidell. The ticket matched five of the numbers drawn on Wednesday, May 21, and scooped them a $1 million win.
The couple picked up their winnings from Louisiana Lottery headquarters on Friday, May 23, 2014, and walked away with $700,000, after state and federal taxes.
When lottery officials enquired about his plans for the money Marek said he intended to lay it aside ready for his retirement.
The US Powerball is a multi-state draw that offers a minimum jackpot of $40 million. Numbers are drawn on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 22:59 (EST). The next drawing is on Wednesday, May 28. The estimated jackpot is $152 million.
