Prison Charity Gets Lottery Funding

A prison charity in Wales has received a hefty £939,000 donation from the UK National Lottery's Big Lottery Fund.

Pact Cymru provides support to the families of young people who have been incarcerated in prisons throughout Wales.

Speaking of the way the charity helped her when her partner was jailed in 2011, Sammy-Jo Moriarty, 26, recalled her experiences while taking their daughter to a prison baby group.

"I couldn't believe how relaxed it was," she said. "Paul [her partner] could change her nappy, bathe her, do painting, and do all the things you can't do on a normal visit. It helped keep the bond."

Joanne Mulcahy, Project Manager for Pact Cymru, said, "There are a lot of children services in prisons but very few that are Welsh specific. We wanted to fill that gap."
