Steelworkers' Christmas Disappointment Soothed by New Year Lottery Win

Twenty-seven steelworkers from the Sahaviriya Steel Industries plant at Redcar won £1 million in the EuroMillions UK Millionaire Raffle on New Year's Eve.

The win couldn't have come at a better a time because a payroll blunder caused the plant's 1,800 workers to miss out on their Christmas (2013) bonus. One worker, described the error as a "Christmas tale of truly Dickensian standards", that left the workforce "facing a bleak Christmas". But who could guess what the New Year would bring for some of their number?

This is the second time that a syndicate from the plant has been successful in a lottery draw. Last September another syndicate, consisting of 30 members, won £300,000.
