A 43-year-old lottery winner and his brother were abducted from their home on Monday. Police are keeping his identity secret, but the unnamed man's $3 million win in Brazil's Mega-Sena Lottery last September appears to have attracted the wrong kind of attention.
Kidnappers Saulo Moraes De Araujo and Felipe Torres considered the lottery winner easy pickings and demanded a ransom of 500,000 reais (over $200,000); without realizing their other criminal activities had already resulted in a tap being placed on their phone. Members of the Sao Paolo police department tracked them down within hours, and De Araujo was killed in the resulting gunfight, but the kidnapped brothers were rescued unharmed.
