A retiree from Elizabeth City, North Carolina, will be paying off her mortgage and buying a couple of cars thanks to a $1 million US Powerball win.
Diana Forbes matched all five winning numbers, but not the Powerball, on Wednesday, October 22, 2014. Getting the Powerball as well would have scooped the $110 million jackpot.
Forbes discovered her Quick Pick ticket had done her proud on Thursday morning when she rang the North Carolina Education Lottery's hotline and checked her numbers. Moments later she was rushing back to her bedroom to give her husband a million dollar wake-up call.
"It was really surreal," Forbes said. "I woke up my husband and said 'Honey, I think we won a nice prize.' I'm definitely going to live a little easier."
The US Powerball is a multi-state draw that offers a minimum jackpot of $40 million. Numbers are drawn on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 22:59 (EST). The next drawing is on Wednesday, October 29, 2014. The estimated jackpot is $142 million.
