Lottery Win Brings a Little Cheer to Cancer Patient

A man who was recently diagnosed with cancer got a more pleasant surprise earlier this month when he won $1 million on a Missouri Lottery "50X the Cash" scratch-off ticket.

In an announcement made on Friday, the Missouri Lottery said Ronald Taylor had just left his doctor's office when he decided to pop into a Price Shopper supermarket in Raytown and buy a scratcher.

"I decided to buy a $5 ticket," Taylor said. "I won $5, so I bought another $5 ticket and it was a $10 winner. So, I thought, 'I’ll just buy a $10 ticket then.'—that’s when I hit it."

Taylor claimed his prize on October 1, 2014, and opted for a lump-sum payment of $700,000, before taxes. He initially intended to use some of the money to pay for hospice care for his ailing wife, but she passed away just after he'd claimed the prize. He now plans to use the money to help his daughter and grandchildren.
