Peterborough Man Finally Bags the Jackpot

A 35 year Lotto habit finally paid off and resulted in a big payout for John Pirie from Peterborough, Ontario, when his numbers finally scooped the Canada Lotto 649 jackpot on Saturday, August 16, 2014.

Pirie, who has six children and seven grandchildren, claimed his CAD$ 10.4 million prize on Monday.

"Every Sunday night I stop at the gas station to check my tickets," Pirie explained to lottery officials. "I had five tickets. I was down to my last one and I scanned it in the self-checker."

The last ticket turned out to be worth CAD$ 10,395,605.

When asked about his plans for the money, Pirie said he hasn't had time to decide.

"I’m going to sit back and let it all sink in and take it from there," he said. "It’s come at a good time because I want to retire and now this is going to make it possible."
