The Theater Royal in York has been successful in its bid for lottery funding and will receive £2.9 million from Arts Council England to go towards the £4.1 million redevelopment.
The theater will need to close for eight months next year while the work is carried out.
In a combined statement, Chief Executive Liz Wilson and Artistic
Director Damian Cruden said: "We are very grateful for this investment
from Arts Council England, which shows a real commitment to the City and
the future of our organization."
Arts Council England combines funds provided by the government with monies from UK National Lottery Good Causes and invests it in artistic and cultural experiences that enrich people's lives. Between 2011 and 2015 they expect to invest £2.4 billion in a variety of projects. The National Lottery's contribution has been estimated at £1 billion.
