Lotto Winner's Daughter Hounds her to Make Good on her Promise

A lottery player from Calgary, Canada, who told her daughter she would be allowed to adopt a dog if they had a big win, may have to make good on the doggy deal because she won CAD$5 million in the June 7, 2014, Canada Lotto 6/49 draw.

Maureen Fielding bought her winning ticket from the Superstore at Country Hills Boulevard in Calgary just hours before the draw. She normally sticks to the same set of numbers, but made a snap decision to buy an additional Quick Pick ticket as well.

"It was surreal," Fielding said. "I still cannot believe it."

Her daughter couldn't believe it either because the win could herald the patter of four little feet in the family home.

"My daughter reminded me that I had said if I won the lottery, I would buy her a laptop, a new car and a dog," Fielding said.

She ran her ticket through a self-checker the day after the draw and a "big number" flashed onto the display.

"I said to the clerk, 'I think this is a big winner,' and she asked, 'How much?'" Fielding recalled, and the size of the prize surprised the clerk as much the lucky ticket holder. "Her face turned a different color when she checked my ticket, and then the screen went blank," Fielding said.

Fielding told lottery official her first priority is pay off her bills and she may consider buying a new home, but still had an important decision to make.

"We’re in negotiations over the dog," she said.
